Collegiate Peaks 100 miles West of
Colorado Springs.
The Collegiate Peaks are a group of mountains
in the Sawatch Range, all exceeding
14,000 feet, named after the Ivy League schools.
Princeton, Yale,Columbia, Harvard, and Oxford.
Buena Vista was founded in 1875 as a railroad
distribution site for the many mines in the
area.
Today it is an outdoor recreation center.
The Arkansan River is one of the most popular
white water rafting rivers in Colorado. Fishing
in the high lakes, hiking and mountain biking
are other popular summer activities.
Winter brings cross country skiing, snowshoeing,
and snow mobiling.
The area is known as the banana belt because
of the mild climate.
